zMAX Dragway at Charlotte Motor Speedway

The new zMAX Dragway at Charlotte Motor Speedway consists of a 15,400-foot drag strip with race and slow down lanes, two large grandstands, and luxury control tower behind the starting gate. Prior to design, ESP performed a topographic survey and subsurface explorations of the site. Upon completion of these data collection and analysis operations, our team worked with the client during conceptual design phases to determine the appropriate location for a drag racing facility within an approximately 500-acre site. Conceptual design also involved several meetings with the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) to discuss the specific facility requirements to host a racing event.

ESP provided full civil design and permitting services for the drag racing facility while incorporating details from the NHRA, building architects, and grandstand architects. Large stormwater detention ponds were incorporated into the site to accommodate approximately 50 acres of paved surface drainage. Our services included site plan requirements, grading, erosion and sedimentation control, utility design, and permanent stormwater management. Within the seven-month construction window, the project included movement of approximately 1.2 million cubic yards of structural fill soil.
