Anchored by The Red Berry Estate, a revitalized historic mansion newly repurposed as a grand event venue, this 85-acre mixed-use development also includes a hike and bike trail that connects to the Salado Creek Greenway; a 300,000-square-foot headquarters for catering company RK Group; and The Salado at Red Berry, a 330-unit luxury multi-family development that includes a dog park, cabanas, and infinity pool overlooking Red Berry Lake.

ESP’s San Antonio office (formerly Vickrey & Associates, LLC) was selected to provide civil engineering services for all portions of the Red Berry master development, allowing for seamless coordination of utilities, grading, roadways, and access between the City of San Antonio and developers. Throughout the entire project from conceptual ideas through construction, our team was responsible for coordination to provide a smooth platting and permitting process; maintain constant contact between the city, developers, and contractors; and oversee the construction process to verify that low-impact development (LID) features and utilities were built to plan.

To protect neighboring properties, storm drainage was routed to outfall into Red Berry Lake, a wet bottom and water quality retention pond. Treated water is also released into the lake, allowing sedimentation to settle at the bottom before water flows into Salado Creek. A dam breach analysis was also required due to the age of the man-made Red Berry Lake dam. After coordination with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), a dam breach model was created for a sunny day, barely overtopping, and a design flood breach. An Emergency Action Plan was also designed and submitted.
