Kennedy Expressway Bridge Rehabilitation

In September 2023, Surdex partnered with ESP, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), to support the Kennedy Expressway Bridge Rehabilitation Project. The effort focused on high-precision mobile lidar data collection along a five-mile stretch of I-90/I-94 through downtown Chicago—one of the most heavily traveled urban corridors in the Midwest. With safety and efficiency as top priorities, ESP engineered an innovative control strategy to eliminate the need for traditional ground control placement on active interstate lanes. Fixed scanning equipment was strategically deployed from elevated bridge structures, enabling safe and comprehensive scanning of the corridor without lane closures or exposing crews to live traffic.

From these controlled scans, photo-identifiable points were selected to establish control throughout the corridor, ensuring data accuracy met the demanding standards required for large-scale transportation infrastructure projects. This forward-thinking approach not only enhanced safety and minimized traffic disruption but also provided the geospatial foundation necessary to advance critical infrastructure improvements in partnership with IDOT. To enable precise planning and design for the next phase of this rehabilitation project, IDOT utilized the collected data to extract accurate survey models. Scope of services included establishment of primary and secondary control networks, integration and management of both static and mobile collection, and delivery of calibrated lidar point cloud data and corridor imagery.
