Houston METRO University Corridor Bus Rapid Transit

CivilCorp, an ESP Company, was contracted as the technical lead for all utility and survey investigations for this 26-mile bus rapid transit (BRT) line located in the urban center of Houston and segmented into five sections for engineering design. Mostly center-lane-dedicated with 40+ stations, this new BRT line will connect with the existing METRORapid Red, Purple, and Green light rail lines (LRT) and nearly all of METRO’s major north-south routes west of Main Street. It will also connect with the proposed METRORapid West Houston Corridor, METRORapid Uptown Corridor extension, Westheimer Signature Bus Service, and several BOOST routes. For future interlined service, it would also interface with the METRORapid Silver Line (BRT).

Utility tasks began with reviewing all existing utility data compiled (Investigate, Verify & Validate – IV&V), identifying all utilities impacting the alignment, compiling incomplete/missing utility data, and proceeding through SUE Quality Level D and C processes. To advance design, our utility team coordinated and interfaced closely with the five engineering design teams weekly (sometimes daily). As plans and design progressed, we conducted SUE QL-B designating of utilities and SUE QL-A potholes to refine, plan, and mitigate utility conflicts. After 30% design delivery, CivilCorp was retained to advance and mitigate utility conflicts and relocations.

Survey tasks included aerial, conventional, and mobile lidar of the entire corridor, as well as ROW mapping. Coordination with design teams was continuous as alignment adjustments required additional surveys to meet an aggressive schedule. We deployed ten field survey teams and managed processing and integration/registration of all data for mapping. After 30% design delivery, our team developed scope/schedule/budget (S/S/B) to conduct ROW services for over 600 parcels.
