Dix Park Sunflower Towers

At the proposed grand entrance of the new Dorothea Dix Park laid a 115kV transmission line that was functional but didn’t aesthetically match the City of Raleigh’s vision for the park entrance. Pickett, an ESP Company, was contacted to transform the mundane transmission towers into something marvelous. Inspired by the surrounding annual sunflower patches, which welcome an estimated 100,000 visitors each year, the once ordinary infrastructure at the park entrance was transformed into two towering 73’-0” tall steel sunflowers, each carrying 46 stainless steel petals between 8’-0” and 10’-0” long.

The petals are mounted to a galvanized steel ring with a 23’-9” diameter, fabricated in four segments of variable-diameter tubing. The ring is supported by a 40’-0” long, 12-sided galvanized steel pole on a concrete drilled pier foundation. The new towers mirror the aura of the neighborhood and will prominently invite visitors into the creative, collaborative, and community-focused culture in Raleigh.
