After major flood damage closed Cypress Gardens in 2015, ESP developed a comprehensive master plan to re-envision and renovate the 13-acre historic gardens and low-country swamp owned and operated by Berkeley County, SC.

Due to frequent stormwater retention, the resulting master plan was “designed to flood” by utilizing green infrastructure via low-impact (LID) stormwater features and selecting native plant species with flexibility to include donated plant material.

Cypress Gardens

For an improved visitor experience and long-term resiliency for the County’s total cost of ownership, the inclusive-friendly design ensured ADA accessibility to the gardens and included a new ticket booth, parking lot, redefined vehicular and pedestrian circulation, and relocation of existing structures.
