For this nationally recognized biosolids recycling facility, ESP’s San Antonio office (formerly Vickrey & Associates, LLC) performed a feasibility study and designed drainage improvements to mitigate flooding for a new 15-acre reinforced concrete composting pad to be used for the production of Dillo Dirt™, a fertilizer that can be safely used in the City of Austin’s park facilities and sold to the general public as an EPA-certified soil conditioner. The new 15-acre pad was constructed on an undeveloped, cultivated field, and drainage for the pad was contained in a 7-acre detention pond and conveyed to an existing water quality pond via existing lift station facilities.
During the preliminary feasibility study phase, hydrologic analysis was performed using SCS methodology to determine the required detention volume. The project also included preliminary analysis of alternative drainage strategies, including new or upgraded lift stations. Our team’s design for the stormwater facility met client requirements for complete containment of the City of Austin 100-year storm event as well as specialized outlet structure controls to provide isolation of drainage area runoff volumes and screening capabilities that prevent damage to pumps downstream of the detention facility. In addition, site specific controls were designed to provide segregation of suspended solids from the discharge flow.
