Mitchell Lake Audubon Center & Leaper House

ESP’s San Antonio office (formerly Vickrey & Associates, LLC) provided master planning services for new gardens and site circulation on an approximately two-acre site between the Leaper House parking lot and the back pavilion of the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, including hardscape areas, walking paths, and native landscape beds.

The design included outdoor demonstration gardens to illustrate how native plants, a variety of paving solutions, and other garden amenities could be incorporated into residential settings. Other amenities included a large open space for formal and informal gatherings, pollinator gardens, bird watching blinds, and trail alignments connecting the site amenities together and to the existing Leaper House.

The master plan also provided solutions for future trail connections to ongoing projects, such as the wetlands restoration project that included installation of water-filtering wetland plants and dam modifications to control water levels, as well as the grassland restoration project to restore 20 acres of pastureland for birds and other wildlife use.

To ensure all site amenities are ADA-accessible, phase two of the project included identifying accessible routes from the parking lot to the Leaper House and connection to other existing and proposed site amenities. The project also proposed grading and trail realignments to accommodate accessible routes from the Leaper House to the adjacent garden spaces and outdoor amphitheater.
