ESP’s San Antonio office (formerly Vickrey & Associates, LLC) served as the planning consultant for developing an inventory of the city’s existing trail amenities, updating the city’s Hike & Bike Trail Development Standards, and preparing an interim Hike & Bike Trail Master Plan Update Report to present to the city’s Parks Department. Design efforts included trailhead analysis, design and layout, trail signage analysis, and landscape standards that comply with city ordinances.
This report was intended to inform stakeholders of current trail corridor planning efforts and assist the city as a planning tool in acquiring land for hike and bike trail corridors. It also presented benefits associated with hike and bike trails, low-cost recreational opportunities, alternative forms of transportation, habitat enhancements for plants and wildlife, and unique opportunities for outdoor education and cultural interpretation.
The scope of work included inventory of completed trail projects, incorporation of newly adopted planning studies, and introduction of new trail opportunities. Trail categories and trail standards were updated for proposed tailheads, access points, regional trails, neighborhood trails, natural trails, multi-use paths, stream corridor trails, floodplain multi-use trails, and striped bicycle lanes. Trail signage and marking standards were also defined to increase trail user comfort and safety. Types of trail signs included informational, directional, interpretive warning, and regulatory signs.
